Background:
The Lightweaver name was handed down from a famous seamstress in Kale's
ancestry, who worked for a Royal Court in the distant Notannes homeland.
When Kale's great-great-great grandfather fled to Western Glashia, he,
along with a small group of about 20 other Notannes found their way to
the Kingdom of Langington. There, they settled in the Silken Valley, so
named for a small thriving community of silkworm cultivators. Freed from
generations of slavery in their homeland, these Notannes jumped at the
chance to control their own destiny, and were a very industrious people.
From their humble beginnings tending the farms that fed the silkworms,
harvesting and boiling the silkworms to release the fibers, and spinning
the fibers into silk threads, the Lightweaver clan rose to their current
status as recognized weavers, dyers, and tailors of exquisite silk
fabric and clothing.
Kale's father runs a small but well known silk dyeing shop in the Silken
Valley. The mostly family run business specializes in bright and exotic
colors, and their products are prized by Royal Seamsters throughout
Western Glashia. Kale, as the eldest, was trained to follow in his
father's footsteps, but early on, it became apparent that Kale was more
interested in athletic pursuits, and his desire to see the world outside
of Silken Valley was great.
Kale worked out a compromise with his father where he escorted his
father's shipments of silk to various cities in Langington. Kale's
father prepared him well by giving him the best training in the fighting
arts that money could buy in Silken Valley, and hired veteran bodyguards
to accompany him and his silk wares. Kale's skills as a fighter grew in
these trips; he would make close to ten such trips in a year, and on
occasion, a single trip would take as long as half the year.
Eventually, Kale's father resigned himself to the fact that Kale would
probably not become a merchant like him. He was too good a fighter, and
the explorer's spirit that enabled his forefathers to find Western
Glashia was too strong in him. After all, there was Erik, the second
born; he showed much more enthusiasm for the trade than did his brother.
So Kale's adventuring career began in earnest, and in the couple of
years that followed, he went as far north as the the Fillian Mountains
to fight the marauding bands of goblins and orcs, and as far west as the
Oesch-Onarga, the greatest site of learning in Western Glashia. Kale
would return to Silk Valley regularly, at times accompanying important
shipments for his father, at times bringing in the ingredients for a
previously unknown dye, and always, bringing in wonderful stories of his
adventures.
Description:
A typical Notannes, Kale is 5'7" tall and weighs in at 165 lbs. He has
black hair and slanted light brown eyes. The yellowish skin tone he had
as a child is all but unnoticeable under a light tan. His features are
clear and unlined, and his boyish looks tends to make people
underestimate his age.
Lean and muscular, Kale is in great physical shape, thanks to his
program of intense and dedicated exercise and training. He carefully
plans and implements his workout schedule, always striving to achieve
that next milestone, be it a record press or the next level of
complexity in a combat routine. Kale cuts his hair short and usually
wears loose fitting (but not baggy) clothes. His posture is relaxed and
his movements economical, and one can sense coiled strength under his
calm exterior. In combat situations, he can perform feats requiring
intense physical exertion and aggression, while his mind still remains
cool and calculating.
Kale recognizes and admires good craftsmanship, but is uncomfortable
with extravagance or obvious signs of wealth. He tends to like things
that are understated: a plain looking sword with excellent balance and
edge, or a pair of comfortable and well made boots without the shine.
Function, comfort, and economy are important, but excessive cosmetic
work is unecessary. Kale's father instilled these values into his
family, and ensured that they are aware of their humble beginnings. As
such, Kale's family does not normally wear the brightly hued cloths that
they produce, except when required to show potential buyers.
